Job Description


Responsible for leading the research and development efforts to identify and integrate end-to-end solutions for managing the flow of goods, funds and information between healthcare manufacturers and providers.  Utilizes knowledge of new technologies and scientific concepts to formulate new or improve upon Owens & Minor's suite of products, programs and service offerings in an effort to enhance the Company's revenue and/or market share.  Employs next generation data services business models to inform innovative and transformation initiatives.  Re-engineers business processes to drive actionable insights, maximize profitability and quality and create supply chain transparency.


1.      Enhances Owens & Minor's competitive position and profitability by formulating research and development (R&D) program strategies, policies and procedures.

2.      Formulates the Owens & Minor end-to-end value proposition and business model that will enhance research, foster a new generation of R&D talent and incent the development of corporate, next-generation technologies.

3.      Partners with stakeholders to translate Manufacturer and Provider customer needs into a pipeline of relevant, commercially-driven innovation solutions while achieving Company profitability and short/long-term growth objectives.

4.      Identifies new technologies and technology partners across the healthcare continuum to support strategy.

5.      Seeks alignment and collaboration with other Owens & Minor functions to bring together ideas to design service experiences that are transformative, appropriately resourced and scalable.

6.      Advises executive leaders on opportunities to invest in Med-Surg and PPI innovation and design initiatives.

7.      Identifies lighthouse accounts to pilot new project and initiatives.

8.      Develops departmental budgets, policies and procedures to support the function's infrastructure.

9.      Engages in project management assuring that all pipeline initiatives have clear deliverables and milestones.

10.  Designs an effective resource allocation process (risk assessment, capital budgeting, facilities, etc.) to take potentially emerging trends forward from seed stage to the market. 

11.  Provides an organizational shelter to retain and protect new ideas until a feasible timing is found for implementation.

12.  Develops the necessary processes to support the establishment of new intellectual property. 

13.  Leads, manages and supports the Owens & Minor R&D team in the analysis of market trends and disruptions to aid in the development of innovative, Med-Surg products, programs, business opportunities and/or technologies.

14.  Builds strong relationships with industry experts.

15.  Stays abreast of industry best practices by participating in various design and innovation trade groups, boards and associations.


1.      Up to 25% travel may be required.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, required, in Business Administration, Research, Public Healthcare, Information Technology, Health Administration or relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Master's degree required, in Business Administration, Research, Public Health, Information Technology, Health Administration or relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Minimum, twelve (12) years of progressively responsible, global corporate-environment experience in research methodologies, data gathering for deep customer insights, leading innovation-related methodologies (Lean, Design-Thinking, etc.), entrepreneurship, or similar function, required.
  • Minimum, three (3) years supervisory experience in directing the operational activities of a team.


  • Demonstrated ability to lead broad (national and international) change management initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain valuable business relationships in a matrixed, ambiguous, fast-paced environment while maintaining a focus on execution and results.
  • Demonstrated strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills with well-developed business acumen.
  • Demonstrated organizational savvy and executive-level leadership skills in managing leaders and staff (hiring, training, coaching and development, performance evaluations, etc.).
  • Interpersonal skills to include ability to:  objectively handle conflict management; form constructive and effective relationships with clients and customers; demonstrate attentive and active listening skills; communicate effectively verbally, in writing and through presentations with the ability to adjust accordingly for a diverse range of internal and external constituents, stakeholders and audiences.
  • Strong data analytical skills, with the ability to make technically sound decisions and solve problems while working under pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to dive deep into the details if necessary.
  • Strong action-orientation with the ability to:  identify opportunity; adapt to change; work independently; prioritize tasks/responsibilities and drive to finish regardless of opposition.
